Japanese Anime Fans Open Up About Their Favorite Anime Opening Sequences

by Michelle "Ms. Geek" Klein-Hass

The Opening Sequence is the bit in front of an anime series that sets the tone and should ideally pull you in to watch. Often, it's the best animated and best designed part of the show, and occasionally a middling to bad show still has a really awesome one. And of course, it's where they show off the OP theme song, often as important to the Production Committee of the show as the anime itself, because it's going to be duking it out in the J-Pop charts.

Readers of the magazine Anime Anime were asked for their favorites, and came up with a top 10. We'll attempt to find the actual OPs for your online screening enjoyment. I'll also throw in a few that might not have made the list that I really like at the end.

9.) (Tie) Golden Time Lover Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

9.) (Tie) X Encounter Tokyo Ravens

8.) (Tie) Lupin The Third '80 Lupin The Third Part II

8.) (Tie) Goya no Machiawase Noragami

7.) Asterisk Bleach

6.) Gekido D.Gray Man

5,) Kyoran Hey Kids!! Noragami Aragoto

4.) TANK!! Cowboy Bebop

3.) abnormalize Psycho-Pass

2.) Guren no Yumiya Attack on Titan
(Sorry I couldn't find the actual OP, but this was kind of cool...a Taiko no Tatsujin perfect play of the song at high difficulty rating)

1.) This Game No Game No Life

Here are a few of my picks:

Dream, Hurry Up All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku OAV

Duvet Serial Experiments: Lain

Free Bird Haibane Renmei

Tatakae! Otaking! Otaku no Video "1982" OAV

Battle Cry Samurai Champloo

And finally, a classic I'm frankly surprised is missing...
