We know that our audience is loaded with talent. And we have been hearing the voices of the people who want to get their artwork noticed, and have been thinking of ways to help out. We at TOKYOPOP have always believed in developing new global manga talent, and made a point of doing so throughout our history. We are working on a larger contest that will be announced at a later date, but for now we are pairing up with Smith Micro to give away five copies of their Manga Studio software to the artists who impress us the most with their superior Manga-Fu!
From now until July 19th, you can submit single-panel artwork on Instagram, using the hashtag #MangaFu . We will be monitoring this hashtag and selecting the 10 best from these entries. Then on July 21st, the 10 best will be re-uploaded to our own Instagram account for voting. Voting will go on from July 21st to 31st. The audience votes will be tallied, and TOKYOPOP Founder/CEO Stu Levy will make the final determination of the four runners-up and the grand prize winner.
Four runners-up will win a copy of Manga Studio 5, the entry-level version of Manga Studio. One grand prize winner will win a copy of Manga Studio EX5, the choice of many comic and manga professionals worldwide. These winners will be announced in our newsletter the weekend of August 2nd-3rd, and also throughout our social media accounts.
A few guidelines:
- We do not want fanart based on any existing characters, for copyright reasons. We would like you to work with your own characters in your submissions.
- Keep content "PG." As much as we like edgy stuff, we would like people to do art they wouldn't be uncomfortable with your little brother, little sister or your parents checking out.
- We are looking for a single-frame "splash" image. Since we are on Instagram, the frame would have to be a square. The artwork should communicate an entire idea with a single image.
- If you are under 18, we will have to have your parents sign a release to allow us to announce your artwork as a winning artwork. If you are an adult, we will need you to sign a release. You will remain in ownership of the art and the characters within. Your art is yours.
So sharpen your pencils and rev up your smartphones! We look forward to you showing us what you've got!
