Hong Kong’s lovable and best known film star that bad guys should learn to leave alone is at it again in STX Entertainment’s latest action-thriller, “The Foreigner”.

Based on Stephen Leather’s (Isn’t that a great last name for an author?) 1992 novel ‘The Chinaman,’ The Foreigner forces a humble restaurant owner in London’s Chinatown to test his moral and physical limits to track down a ruthless group of Irish terrorists responsible for his daughter’s death.

A short list of directors including Nick Cassavetes (“The Notebook,” “The Other Woman”) is making the rounds with filming expected to start in October. As people in relationships everywhere can attest, if there’s anyone who knows how to summon tears directing relationship dramas, it’s Cassavetes. Just ask these girls:

Launched only a year ago by film producer Robert Simonds and TPG managing partner Bill McGlashan, STX Entertainment is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. Producing projects in the modest $10 million to $80 million range, the company aims to release as many as 15 films by 2017. Financial backers of the company include venture capital firm and co-founder TPG, Chinese private equity firm Hony Capital, and investors Gigi Pritzker and Beau Wrigley, along with film financing from China’s largest privately held firm, Huayi Brothers Media Corp. Not two months ago, STX and the Huayi Brothers pacted a three-year deal that begins in 2016 for 12 to 15 projects per year. In addition, Huayi will share in the global revenues of the slate and have a first-look distribution deal in China on most of STX’s films.

STX’s slate also includes writer-director Gary Ross’ Free State Of Jones starring Matthew McConaughey; a remake of the 2010 Oscar Best Foreign Language Film (yes, they’re already doing a remake) The Secret In Their Eyes with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman, and Julia Roberts; the psychological thriller The Gift with Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall; and the horror film The Boy from William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside). Huayi Brothers are STX’s partner on all of these films, too.
