Original content is king for online streaming services. Netflix changed the game with ʻHouse of Cards,ʼ and now every VOD service is churning out their very own original series. Japanese customers of dTV streaming service, formerly known as dVideo, a joint venture between telco giant Docomo and production company Avex, now have a series of their own to look forward to with a three part live-action ʻAttack on Titanʼ miniseries.
The miniseries will take place within the same continuity as the two upcoming live-action films, and the actors from the films will be reprising their roles. Even the sets are the same, reassuring fans that this miniseries will be a welcome addition to the AoT lore. Although the story of ʻAttack on Titanʼ technically follows protagonist Eren, he is not the fan-favorite, a superlative that usually goes to Levi. As a result, the producers of the miniseries feel comfortable shifting the perspective of the miniseries to follow mad scientist Hans, who in the live-action films is depicted as an RPG-loving nut.
Story details are scarce, but actress Satomi Ishihara, who plays Hans, has disclosed that the miniseries will deal with “titan research and the birth of the 3D maneuver gear,” sparking rumors that the miniseries could in fact be a prequel.
Ishihara will be joined by Nanami Sakuraba, Shu Watanabe, Rina Takeda, and Ayame Misaki, who play Sasha, Fukushi, Lil, and Hiana, respectively. The series also includes a brand new character named Izuru, played by Yuta Hiraoka, for which details are currently under wraps.
The miniseries will become available on dTV in August. The dTV streaming service is available for a flat fee of 500 yen per month and provides its subscribers access to a catalogue of over 120,000 movie, TV, and music options.
The first live-action ʻAttack on Titanʼ film is also scheduled to drop in theaters on August 1st, and production on the second season of the anime begins in 2016.
