Studio Ghibli Considering Dismantling of Production Department

Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki appeared on TBS television last weekend to discuss the studio’s future now that Hayao Miyazaki has retired from directing feature films. Suzuki explained that the studio is now considering dismantling the production department, in exchange for the studio focusing on managing the trademarks of its existing characters and films. While the studio decides its new direction, it will be taking a brief hiatus from filmmaking. Its latest film, When Marnie Was There, is currently playing in Japanese theaters.

Suzuki himself stepped down from his producing role this year, and is now the general manager of Studio Ghibli.
